The filter module writes the file .fil which has the same format as .dep but contains only the subset of filtered dependences. This file is read by the dispo module. In the case that filter is not invoked, the dependence module writes two identical files, .dep and .fil. This way, filter can also be invoked several times for the use with Dispo without losing information.
